User Guide – Use Family Sharing via Find my iPhone

Do you want to use Family Sharing through Find my iPhone? Set up Family Sharing

Before you can set up Family Sharing using Find My iPhone, you want to use the Family Group first.

Step 1:

Head over to Settings on your iPhone or iPad.

Step 2:

Then click on your iCloud account banner located at the top.

Step 3:

Click on Family Sharing.

Step 4:

Select the first feature that you like to share with your family.

  • In this situation, it would be Location Sharing.
Step 5:

Choose Invite Family Member, and then share an invitation via iMessage, in person, or make a new child account.

  • If you’re on iOS 10 or earlier, you’ll want to click on Get Started and then follow the on-screen steps to invite family members.
  • iOS 11 also has the choice to invite someone in person.
Step 6:

You can also repeat the whole process of inviting a family member for six people.

How to track iOS devices with Find My iPhone and Family Sharing

You want to have the Find My iPhone app installed to track devices in your Family Sharing group. If you don’t have it, you can simply download or install it for free through the App Store. Each device must also be executing iOS 8 or higher and compatible Family Sharing.

Step 1:

Head over to Settings from your Home screen.

Step 2:

Click your Apple ID banner at the top.

Step 3:

Click iCloud.

Step 4:

Click on Find My iPhone.

Step 5:

Click the switch located next to Find My iPhone to enable it (green is on).

Track a family member’s device via Find My iPhone

Step 1:

Initially, launch the Find My iPhone app from your Home screen.

Step 2:

Then sign in to your individual iCloud account.

Step 3:

Click on any device to get more information and track it — your devices display up at the top, followed by everyone else’s.

Step 4:

Click Play Sound if the person can’t sharing their location. Their iPhone makes a sound of shrill beeping. You can also click to lock the device or remove it.
